Get rid of defender: Trapping

In this and upcoming lessons, we will combine removing the defence with another weapon. We start with trapping.

What should you do?

Win material or mate by combining removing the defence with trapping.

The bishop on e5 defends against mate. White would like to eliminate the defender, but after, say, 1.Qg5, black covers the bishop with 1...Nc6 and black is out of trouble.

Something else that stands out about the position is that black has not yet brought the pieces on the queen's wing into play. The rook on a8 cannot move because of this.

The bishop on e5 is overloaded. The piece has to defend both g7 and square c7. That is one task too many. White takes advantage with 1.Nc7! The rook is trapped. If black captures the knight, the damage is even worse: 1...Bxc7 (the bishop is lured away) 2.Qxg7 mate!
